Sweetness

I may be biased, but I think there is not much sweeter than a peacefully sleeping babe. Serene is learning to nap during the day in her crib, and I think the transition to her own room will be harder on Alex and me than it shall be on her. We've a case of separation anxiety already - yikes!

Serene Joy's nursery is undoubtedly my favorite nook in our new little home. While I was pregnant with her up until our move a month ago, she did not have a room since the spare bedroom in our former apartment was for Craftheopolis. Once we commenced packing, we purged much of that craft/study room's contents. Now, the second bedroom at our current place belongs to Serene. I did not really have a solid vision of what I wanted her nursery to look like. Because I already had a slew of knick knacks I procured or made long ago for decorating purposes, I vowed not to buy anything of that nature, but to just use what I already had. I wasn't sure how the color palette would turn out, except that it would be colorful. I particularly love how bright the sun shines through the white curtains to illuminate everything in her room. Mostly everything is vintage, handmade, or passed down from lovely chums. The only pieces that were newly acquired are her crib, crib mattress, and rocking chair, all of which were gifts from dear friends at our baby showers. I confess, she does not sleep during the night in her crib yet, since I still feel she is too little to be by her lonesome at those hours (this might also be an excuse for my inability to transfer her from her bassinet by our bedside). For now, she plays and (sometimes) naps in here. Her changing pad and diapering supplies are missing from the pictures, which we currently have stationed in our room. Since she is turning three months old in less than a week, we plan to slowly incorporate the changing area and the crib. The only other piece of furniture that was bought for her nursery is the worn primary-colored dresser, which I nabbed during my third trimester for a steal of a deal at a local secondhand shop because it was missing the top drawer. I compensated for the missing drawer with a couple of vintage enamel basins we had lying around to store socks, hats, toys, and other accessories. Most of the books on her red shelf are my childhood favorites, including my own copies of the historical American Girl series and Little House on the Prairie set from when I was a little girl. The reading corner is also decorated with vintage record covers of some of my most-loved musicals, along with mid-century copies of Mary Poppins and Eloise, a couple of the books Alex used to propose that momentous day. Children's books are absolutely some of my favorite items. I spent so much of my childhood reading (I used sit on the bathroom floor poring over books, until my mom found out, to her exasperation, that I wasn't actually getting ready for school). Here's to hoping Serene also loves to read, and that she finds her room as sweet and jolly as I do.

Good news of great joy

hongs christmas 2013
Happiest of birthdays to our Savior, who is Christ the Lord, born in humility to die in humility on the cross as the penalty for our sins, and ultimately, for the salvation of all who would believe. This is indeed good news of great joy - the greatest joy amidst Christmastide partying, feasting, gifting, and gathering. We are so grateful for God's gift to us in Jesus Christ, and for the gift of Serene this year. We've grand hopes to exalt Christ as supreme this season and in the ones to come with our little one. Wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas!

We had a lovely Christmas Eve with our Santa baby and fellow family here at our little home. Serene had a ball playing in front of the tree on the beautiful handmade quilt (dotted with thoughtful written messages on quilt blocks!) the ladies from our church made for her. We also had sweet visitors throughout the day and heralded in Christmas with a feast and time spent reading the Christmas story of God's ultimate gift to us in Christ's birth. So thankful for God's kindness to us in His Son. Hope your Christmas Eve was swell as well, and a very merry Christmas to you and yours!

Tidbits of Christmas cheer

Not much Christmas decorating got accomplished in the new little home this year besides tidbits of the Yuletide season pictured above around the house and a tree up in the living room that we acquired the afternoon we took our first legit family pictures. I had high hopes of sewing stockings this year for Serene's first Christmas, but alas, that did not happen. Life has been a hullabaloo this holiday season, and God has been reminding me that Christmas ultimately isn't all about having a picture-perfectly decorated home, attending manifold parties, baking dozens of cookies from scratch, writing custom-made Christmas cards, wrapping gifts with nifty packaging, and such. Though all of these things are swell and sweet, I've been much too caught up on the fanfare that I've been stressed, selfish, and short-tempered. So humbling that though I know this, I've admittedly succumbed to the consumer culture Christmas craziness anyhow. Indeed, I am thankful for several accidents with our Christmas tree this year that glaringly revealed to me that I'd lost focus on Christ the Savior whose birth this holiday originated. We don't have elaborate plans tomorrow on Christmas Eve or on Christmas day - just a small dinner gathering tomorrow with a couple of family members, with time to reflect on God's surpassing gift to us in Christ. I can't wait. Plus, there's always next year to make stockings.

Contagious

Serene's smile is thoroughly contagious. We swoon every time she flashes her wide-mouthed grin at us. Particularly since her smiles take over her entire face and are usually accompanied by her "talking." What an absolutely joyful babe! She is indubitably infecting our house with heaps of cheer, especially since Christmas fast approaching. The pictures above were taken when she was 9 weeks and 5 days, though she is 11 weeks now. Where is the time going?!

Over the weekend, we made a highly anticipated excursion to the same local tree farm as last year, where a kind soul blessed us with our very first Christmas tree as married folks - an unforgettable deed in our books that shall have us intending to return every year to chop down our tree for the winter holiday. While we scored an 8-foot evergreen beauty to lug home, we also took our very first official family pictures there. We were a tad nervous because 1) we had never done so before (with a 9-week-old babe), 2) it was intensely nippy so we were anxious about Serene freezing, and 3) we woke Serene up from her nap so her half-asleep self was not in the mood for picture-taking. However, the amazingly talented Daniela Rey was so sweet, efficient, and so pro during the session that we had a jolly time. We are absolutely smitten with the photos she shot of our little  family. It makes me wish she could be there at all of our future outings to capture memories for us - haha! We had tons of fun, and I can't wait to use some of these photos for our first family Christmas card this year. If any of you lads or ladies are scouting for a photographer to take your family pictures, or any lifestyle/event photos in general, you must contact Daniela at her website or on Facebook!
