Dressed up

We don't dress Serene up much. If Alex could have his way, she'd be in her footed pajamas all day long. After all, with spontaneous drool, spit-up, and poop explosions, it seems sensible to err on the more practical side of clothing choices. But when we do manage to put a frock on her, especially when it is a vintage one we snagged at the flea market last summertide for only a buckaroo, I attempt to document it before the aforementioned excretory surprises make it into the picture. These snapshots were captured this Sunday past, the day of the week when Serene is customarily the dressiest, for that is when we spend the majority of the day with our church family learning to know and love the Lord more. Alex preaches every other Sunday, and when he does, Serene is ever so calm when listening to his voice over the speakers as we sit in the cry room with the other mamas and their wee ones. She is always thoroughly thrilled to see him after service, too. Actually, she is legitimately glad to beam at anyone who will heap tons of attention on her. Hoping this is a precursor to her fondness for the local church. We are blessed to be surrounded by such sweet community, and we pray that as Serene grows up, she ascertains the love of Christ through the gift of the local church.

At 16 weeks, Serene's all about her hands. She has a new found dexterity in sucking on her thumb (and index finger). Sometimes while gnawing mercilessly on Sophie the giraffe. Hands and drool are currently her two favorite things. When mixed together, slobbery digits are followed by goofy grins and excited squeals, per the last photo above, which turned out blurry because she was throwing her little body forward in gurgly glee. Which ended in a face-first landing on the bed. So cute. Which made me marvel at how quickly she's developing. The last time I took pictures of her in that white onesie in the photos above was when she barely turned one month old and it fit her loosely. Now she is nearly four months and it fits her perfectly. Stop the time, please!

We love reasons to celebrate, so when we found out a dear friend would be in town for her birthday weekend, we schemed to surprise her with a mid-morning feast. I whipped up a quick tissue paper garland the night beforehand to hang over our dining table for a festive touch, and we just partook in a simple spread of wine food with berry lemonade instead of wine since it was brunchtime. All the edibles were store-bought, because, to be honest, the time I used to tarry in the kitchen has transferred over to caring for Serene. We all had a grand time nonetheless, for though we are often around people, legit quality time with dear friends feels far and in between, and therefore, is all the more to be cherished. Oh, and now I want to eat smoked salmon with cheese and crackers all. the. time.

This past weekend's eighty degree weather made an outdoor jaunt nearly imperative, where only in Southern California could we mosey about in tank tops and breezy skirts in January. A couple of friends were in town for the long weekend, so we decided to bask in the sunshine during a trek over to the flea market. It was a much-missed pastime, particularly since I hadn't been there since my second trimester. Serene usually naps whenever she is in her car seat/stroller, so I expected her to snooze the whole time we'd be perusing the wares. She woke up within five minutes of our arrival instead, and promptly decided not to miss out on her very first outing to the flea market by declaring war on her stroller. I chastised myself for forgetting to pack my sling as my arms got exponentially buffer while Serene, nestled contentedly in my arms, seemed mesmerized by all the vintage goodies (perhaps a foreshadowing of her preference for things time-honored, too?). However, the sun's rays were blazing, none of us had sunscreen, and shady spots were lacking, all of which contributed to the trip's unforeseen brevity. New mamahood lessons learned that afternoon: expect the baby to do what she customarily does and she will do the exact opposite to humble you, and overpack the diaper bag as if you're going to be away ten times as long as anticipated. Or ditch the last two lessons and have Alex watch the baby for a spell the next time I'm rummaging in the sun.

Spent

serene at 14 weeks
It has been a nutty week, and we are thoroughly spent. We're still in the trenches of learning to balance everyday life, with Alex went back at seminary this past week for his final semester and my back into the work swing of things during the day, while building community with the residents in our apartment complex, and doing ministry/church life during the night. Serene's been adjusting to a new routine too, as I drop her off to different caretakers a couple of times a week. We're on the go from dusk 'til dawn, and we didn't get home until 9-10pm most nights this past week. By then, we are all so exhausted that we just mumble nonsense to each other before we knock out. There aren't enough hours in a day, and we're learning to be more efficient while on the go with a little one, which has entailed fast and furious diaper changes in the car, bottle-feeding while driving to our next destination, and one of us waiting in the car with Serene while the other grabs groceries or toiletries from the store. This new everyday has been making trying to adhere to a consistent routine for Serene's (and our) sanity practically null, and we've been advised that we just need to learn to say no to certain things. Maybe it may have to come to that, but until then, I'm cheering wildly as we herald in this three-day weekend. Happy Friday, lovelies!

Serene's newborn necessities

serene's newborn necessities

serene's newborn necessities
When we were pregnant with Serene, I was promptly overwhelmed when contemplating what we'd need to acquire for a brand-new human being. Everything I read regarding the subject online and on blogs told me I ought to buy seemingly hundreds of items. I was nearly convinced by consumerism that Serene needed gear in the likes of a diaper pail until I realized that parents of yore did not always have tall, perfumed trashcans to store dirty diapers, and their babies turned out just fine. So I sought guidance from mama and papa friends on newborn necessities, and though their advice helped narrow down the list from the superfluous to the must-haves, I was then faced with what kind of baby essential to buy (Why are there so many types of strollers? Should we get a travel system? Full-size stroller? Convenience stroller? Umbrella stroller? Jogging stroller? One that converts to a double stroller? And don't even get me started on which brand to choose!) That's when I turned to (Amazon) reviews for solace. I read customer reviews on everything (on some nights until the wee hours of the morning) my entire third trimester in an attempt to select the best, yet most mandatory stuff. Aside from the general needs like onesies, a carseat, a stroller, diapers, wipes, etc., the following 8 items kept 0-3 month old Serene content (I can't believe she is no longer a newborn!). Though I'm aware that every baby is different and might not have the same needs that Serene did, my hope is that this list shall help other mamas-to-be shrink down that excessive 300+ item list that Babies "R" Us claims we  need.

1. Bassinet
Our bassinet is undoubtedly my favorite newborn item, for it's the one Serene used the most; she slept in it since we brought her home from the hospital. We did not intend to buy a bassinet because her crib would be in the corner of our room, but, as an OCD new mama, I realized I wanted her not 5 feet away, but right by my bedside, and in a snug space that the crib could not provide in those early days. A sweet friend recommended the Fisher Price Rock 'n Play, so I looked up reviews. They were spectacular, stating that babies love that the incline helps them feel as if they're being cradled as they snooze. Indeed, Serene loved the Rock 'n Play and slept steady stretches in it during the day and night. It was also light and easily maneuverable throughout our home. Though she now sleeps in her crib at night, she still uses the Rock 'n Play during naptimes, and anytime we need to set her down so we can, say, eat a meal.

2. Nursing Pillow
I never could have fathomed how much time I'd spend nursing a newborn (every 2-3 hours around the clock!). I never realized that new mamahood meant I would be promoted to resident milk machine, either. In both cases, I am so grateful for a nursing pillow. A dear friend looked through our baby registry, noticed that we didn't have a nursing pillow on it, and insisted it was absolutely something we needed. I thought I could use a normal pillow, but I am so thankful we got a Boppy that Serene could lay on while feeding. If we hadn't, my arms probably would have fallen off by now.

3. Swaddling Blankets
I don't think people really need the sought-after Aden & Anais brand of swaddling blankets, but those were the ones we received at one of our baby showers, and we love them. Serene actually detested being swaddled; she wanted to flail her little arms and legs as she pleased, so we stopped trying to constrain her in a swaddle after the first week. However, swaddling blankets are so soft and versatile. They served, at different points in her first three months of life, as a car seat cover, a nursing cover (before I got a real one), a portable changing pad (until I bought a real one), a regular blanket while she slept, etc.

4. Cotton Balls
Up until Serene was 6 weeks old, we used cotton balls dipped in warm water to clean her bum during diaper changes. We had never used so many cotton balls in our lives.Good thing they don't cost much, and even better that they didn't irritate her delicate newborn skin.

5. Diaper Ointment
Serene has really sensitive skin, apparently. We use wipes more often during diaper changes now that she's older, but every so often, she'll get diaper rash, even though we use wipes for sensitive skin. That's where Burt's Bees Baby Bee Diaper Ointment comes in handy. It's all-natural and heals her bum of varying degrees of diaper rash practically instantly. Plus, it makes her bum smell minty fresh - who would be adverse to that?

6. White Noise
Newborns are partial to white noise since that's what they're used to from their days in the womb. We would repeat "Shhhhh!" in her ears, but that wasn't sustainable, especially since we were sleep-deprived zombies. Then I discovered the Sleepy Sounds App, which we downloaded for free onto our phones. From that historic point on, most of the times Serene commenced wailing during the first couple of months, we'd use the white noise option from the app to calm her. Seriously a sanity saver.

7. Nasal Aspirator
New babes accumulate new snot on the daily. The Nosefrida Nasal Aspirator helped us get all the boogers out of her teeny nostrils so that she could breathe more easily. In the name of good hygiene, it was a tiny victory for us every time we sucked one of those wet suckers out. Serene didn't agree. She hates getting her nose vacuumed to this very day.

8. Pacifier
Babies have an uncontrollable urge to suck. I didn't figure that out until Serene was 6 weeks old. Sometimes, she'd nurse for a bit and end the session crying. Once I realized she was full but still wanted to suck, we gave her the pacifier. We received Avent pacifiers at one of our baby showers, which she prefers to this day. I also tried giving her the Gumdrop ones, but she didn't like them. These days, she uses the pacifier to sleep through the night, and when she can't, to her chagrin, manage to get her fingers to stay in her mouth.

Hope you had a grand weekend, dears. Ours was a gem - a rare weekend where we'd hardly anything on our calendar, which entailed rest. Leisure reading in a sunshine-washed bedroom. Sermon-prepping (for Alex) after a homemade brunch. Grocery shopping at Trader Joe's without beating the clock. Capturing on camera as many of our 14-week-old's winsome smiles as possible. Cherishing time at home with my loves because we'd survived my first full week back at work, and are finding that Serene is generally no less jolly than she was when I was home 24/7 with her. Which soothed bouts of anxiety (insecurity?) that perhaps, just perhaps my absence would permanently hamper her socio-emotional well-being and turn her into an emo teenager one day. Grateful that all working mama testimonials declare that adjustment for all gets easier as time goes by, and exceedingly appreciative for a Saturday to just be still.

Our spontaneous Downton tea-v party

downtown season 4 premiere
Did any of you catch the season 4 premiere of Downton Abbey? We're unabashed fans of Downton,.and it  is pretty much the only show Alex and I watch together. Alex has literally been counting down the days until this season's premiere since last season's finale; he loves it so much that when it dawned upon me last year that we were pregnant, I felt I had to wait until after that evening's episode of Downton was over before I could break the news to him. We don't have television in our little home, so we customarily watch shows after their air date on the projector when we can stream them online. I thought it'd be fun to celebrate the premiere with a spontaneous tea party a la Downton accompanied by tasty edibles we already had on hand: smoked salmon and sharp cheddar on wheat crackers, choco-covered strawberries, apple pie, chocolate-covered shortbread cookies, and apple slices.

It was also nice to unwind tonight since we've all been transitioning to my being back at work full-time since last Thursday. Serene has not been adjusting as well as we'd hoped. Since the prior update from last week, she commenced this week by crying as relentlessly as ever with her daddy today, rejecting the bottle and drinking less than 2 oz during the 10 hours I was gone today.I know we must persevere because there is no way around bottle-feeding while I'm at work, but it's been making us so sad. And the anxiety I now feel being away from her for so long is pretty excruciating...I need tons of God's grace. Hoping that each new day will be easier for Serene than the last. I'd appreciate any advice from you mamas out there on transitioning back to work and making bottle-feeding easier on a breastfed babe!
