With the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it was too easy to succumb to a frenzy and not treasure the glory of our newborn King. God allowed us to see our ongoing need for a Savior this Christmas, which makes the gospel lovelier. It is truly the greatest gift of all. I am thankful for Alex who led our family in cherishing Advent this season. When asked why baby Jesus was born, Serene answers, "Baby Jesus die on cwoss foe sins!" We had so much fun witnessing our babes enjoy Christmas. Serene didn't fathom that she would receive "supp-wises" for baby Jesus' birthday, but she caught on quickly. We did simple gifts we felt the kids would cherish. I had high hopes of sewing them each a handmade gift, but time slipped by too quickly. Perhaps another time.

Nevertheless, the kids were enthralled by what they received. In light of Serene's deep-seated affection for tea sets and the Madeline books, we gifted her a Madeline tin tea set, a vintage Madeline doll (similar) with additional outfits in her dollhouse (an amazing $10 Craigslist deal!), and a tea party book. Valor was a bundle of cuddly joy during his first Christmas who was content to sit still and observe his sister open his gifts for him. We gave him a cozy knit blanket (so he would no longer need to use his sister's Hello Kitty blanket), his first stuffie (similar), and a snack bag. Our communal gift to the kids was this bedtime story book. The kids were additionally blessed by dear family and friends who bestowed gifts upon them as we spent Christmas Eve at my dear aunt's, and Christmas Day at my mama-in-law's. Serene loved all her "supp-wises" so much she didn't want to leave the house so she could play with all her new toys.

While it is a joy to witness their joy in these sweet little moments, we pray they find everlasting joy in one day knowing Christ - God's son born to dwell among us and die on the cross to pay for the penalty of our sin, all so that we could be in sweet relationship with God forever if we turn away from our sin and trust in what Jesus has accomplished for us! This is the glory of Christmas.

More than a hundred shots later, and we finally have a couple of pictures with both kids smiling! When I showed Alex the photos, the first thing he noticed was that Serene put her shoes on the wrong feet. Haha! Regardless, these pictures capture Serene's and Valor's personalities these days: Serene's outgoing exuberance, and Valor's cuddly sweetness. Thankful to God for them.

Freshly Picked moccasins giveaway

freshly picked giveaway
I am such a fan of Freshly Picked moccasins. Serene has worn them ever since she was six months, and she still wears moccasins at age two now (see her donning them here, here, here, and here). They are the shoes she picks out on the daily. "I put on moccs!" she exclaims every time we tell her to put on her shoes. It's easy to see why they are her (and our) shoe of choice. They're comfortable since they're made of high-quality leather that contours to growing little feet. They're impeccably made and long-lasting; Serene wore each pair of her FP moccs every day for nearly a year. They're adorable and come in a wide array of colors, so they go with every outfit for every occasion in every season. They're incredibly easy to slip on; they're the only shoes Serene's able to put on herself so far, and the only shoes Alex actually enjoys putting on little feet. Plus, they stay snugly on her feet. It is rare for a baby shoe to be easy to put on, comfortable, durable, flexible, and cute, but Freshly Picked moccasins are all those and more. They are definitely our family's favorite baby shoe. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before Valor sported some FP moccs too! valor at 29 weeks
We got Valor moccs in Blue Spruce in size 3 so he can grow into them. I love how the dusty blue-grey color complements everything he wears. I can't wait for his little footprints to imprint themselves on the bottoms of his moccs as he takes his first steps (and many more!) in them, just as his big sister's did. The memories they hold are precious. Clearly, he's as pleased about his new moccs as we are. freshly picked giveaway

'Tis the season of giving, and I'm thrilled to announce that I'm partnering with Freshly Picked to give away a pair of soft soled moccasins to one of you! It would be an amazing Christmas gift for the little one in your life, whether you're a mama, mama-to-be, or know a mama who would love a pair of FP moccs for their sweet babe. Find out how to enter to win a pair in the size and color of your choice @mrshelenhong on Instagram!

Disclosure: I received a pair of moccs to facilitate my review. No other compensation was provided and all views and opinions stated on this post are my own.

Letters to Valor: 7 months

valor zeal at 7 months
My dear Valor Zeal,

Seven months! How did we get here so quickly, my sweet baby? This month was replete with milestones revolving around food, sleep, and mobility. You started off the month with your first solids: zucchini. To say you loved it is an understatement. You scarfed down almost two ounces that night for dinner. You grabbed at the spoon every time it was on its way to your mouth, gripped with all your might as if to feed yourself, and whined as if you were not fed quickly enough. Since then, you've also eaten butternut squash, carrots, avocados, and a bit of apples and pears (because I thought you were constipated), all with absolute gusto. You are a veritable fan of food in general, though you don't love the high chair; you'd rather sit on my lap as you eat, perhaps because you want to be as close to your mama as possible. Therefore, it's no surprise you prefer nursing above all.

You're finally sleeping consistently longer stretches at night this month, for which we are more thankful than you can fathom. Though you had been able to fall asleep on your own during naptimes and bedtime, you still had to learn to soothe yourself back to sleep when you woke up in the middle of the night. So we moved you into the same room as your big sister. On the first night, you woke after 4 hours. On the second night, you woke after 4 hours and cried for 2 hours before falling asleep again. On the third night, you cried an hour before sleeping until 5am. On the fourth night, you slept 9 hours straight from 8:30pm-5am. Since then, you've been consistently sleeping 8-9 hours before waking up to nurse between 4-6am, and then sleeping another 2-3 hours before getting up for the day. Twice, you slept 10.5 hours straight. I was apprehensive about room-sharing, but it has worked out wonderfully so far. Occupying the same space seems to comfort both you and your sister as she transitions to her big girl bed and you to your crib.

You also share bath time with your sister in the big tub now that you're sitting up well unsupported, which is always an endearing sight for your daddy and me to behold. In addition to sitting up well unsupported, you roll around and scoot everywhere on your tummy as your primary means of transportation. You lurch into crawling position at times, so you may be on your way there soon. You adore standing supported. You grab anything within reach to explore with your mouth. You play contentedly on your own and in your sister's exuberant company, but you're happiest in your mama's presence. You throw your head back in glee and break out into the hugest smile. You bite your bottom lip and coo through closed lips. You cup our faces with both hands. You love being tickled and kissed. I shower you with tons of kisses, which never fails to make you grin widely. You observe the world with the most thoughtful gaze, furrowed eyebrows and all. People often comment on how chill you are. The rare times they hear you cry, they remark it is the first time they've heard you do so. Oh, my sweet baby, we love you so. You are such a joy to our family. We enjoy you so much. God is good to us through you.

Love you so,
Mama

P.S. Valor Zeal at 012345, and 6 months. Plus, his birth story.

Advent is such a cherished time for us. Christmas draws near, and with it, the celebration of Christ our Savior's birth. If you ask Serene what Christmas is about, she will respond enthusiastically, "Baby Jesus!" This year's Christmas is a special one. I say that every year, and I suppose every year it's true. There are milestones to commemorate each year at this time. This year is Valor's first Christmas, and Serene's third. It is the first year Serene was able to excitedly participate in hanging ornaments on the tree, as Valor stared transfixed by the glittering lights and bright baubles. I couldn't resist snapping a few pictures as we decorated the Christmas tree last night. I almost didn't since we were still in our pajamas and I hadn't brushed my hair all day. But I'm so glad I did because the pictures came out real and precious. We opted for an artificial tree from here this year. Though we've had a fresh tree every year since we've been married, I am so thankful for an artificial tree I need not worry about tying to the car, securing to a stand, hosing down, watering, or cleaning pine needles until July, particularly since we have two mobile little ones this Christmastide. Better yet, it was on sale for 50% off and we had a gift card when we bought it, and we get to resuse it in the years to come. We hung fabric ornaments I made for our first Christmas, along with other unbreakable (kid-friendly) ones we've collected the last few years while Christmas songs played in the background. Once the tree was decorated, we sang and reflected on the true reason for the season. So thankful for the hope in Christ, especially with all that is going on in the world.
