I dreamed a dream of time gone by
We dressed as the main characters of our favorite musical, Les Misérables, set in 19th-century France. It was more challenging and amusing than we had anticipated explaining to everyone who we were last night, especially because not many had seen the show onstage. People guessed that the husband was a hobo. Or a sack of potatoes. And I looked like I was wearing a nightgown. Good thing we were able to lay down for everyone the context of our costumes, and to encourage them to watch the film rendition releasing in December. I can't help but laugh when I see these pictures. I am abysmal at looking miserable per the musical's title. We kept cracking up because whensoever I tried to appear miserable, I looked angry instead. We had a ball attempting to impersonate the characters we love in Les Mis. The husband portrayed Jean Valjean, the escaped convict protagonist who was shown mercy by a priest despite being shunned by the rest of society; Valjean in turn extended grace to others because of the grace first demonstrated to him that changed his life. I made the Mister's costume out of burlap, as inspired by other representations of Jean Valjean's convict garb we've seen. I dressed as Fantine, the poor factory worker who sacrificed everything because of her great love for her daughter. I altered a vintage dress I nabbed a while ago for my costume, and attempted to recreate the empire waist and simple lines of early 19th-century proletariat gowns. We had simple costumes ready for a rollicking All Hallow's Eve. Hope you had a happy Halloween!
