La La Land Day
When April 25th was declared La La Land Day last year, Alex and I were itching to throw a La La Land party. We were in the throes of newborn life at this time last year, so this year was the year to execute the idea. Because April 25th this year fell on a Wednesday, the day of the week we hold small group, it was fitting to celebrate La La Land Day with our church family. We transformed our dining room into Seb's, reminiscent of the jazz club Sebastian opens in the movie. We made a huge Seb's logo for the wall out of black butcher paper and scattered multi-level pillar candles on the table to create an intimate ambience. As Sebastian dreamed, we served chicken on a stick (fried chicken tenders on skewers) and (root) beer while playing old school jazz in the background. We also had waffles, creamy mac n' cheese made by a friend, and strawberry salad to complement the chicken and beer. We encouraged everyone to dress like Mia & Sebastian so we could memorialize their timeless style with a photo booth backdrop comprising of a crepe paper moon made by a friend, silver and gold star garlands, and a "city of stars" sign (Reverie slept through the party so we took a family photo without her). For dessert, we invited those who dream to partake in some sweet treats: mini blue velvet cupcakes made by a friend, which we decorated with paper toppers that say "Seb's" and "dream", matcha green tea cheesecake with the "Seb's" logo in white chocolate, and kettle corn to enjoy during the movie. We ended the night by reliving the movie's magical moments. I felt so nerdy but so excited to celebrate La La Land Day. Thankful for those who celebrated and nerded out with us. Here's to the ones who dream!
